Make it 4 straight losses for the Rays and counting. Victor Martinez smacked a grand slam and Rick Porcello was dominant as the Tigers went on to shut out the Rays 6-0 on Wednesday night from Tropicana Field. The Rays fall to 61-65 while the Tigers improve to 68-56. Rays are now 28-36 at home.
The Tigers jumped on Jake Odorizzi in the first inning and they did it with two outs. Miguel Cabrera reached on an infield single. Martinez drove him in with an RBI double down the right field line to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Tigers put this one away in the 7th—and again, the rally started with two out and nobody on. Rajai Davis doubled to left center. Ian Kinsler drove him in with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Detroit. That ended Odorizzi’s night. Kirby Yates came in and made it worse. He served up a grand slam off the bat of Martinez. That made it 6-0 Detroit. Martinez had himself a night—2 for 3 with 5 RBI.
The story on this night was Porcello, who was on his game. After giving up a double to Ben Zobrist in the 1st, Porcello retired 20 straight batters. He recorded a complete game 3 hit shutout to get his 14th win of the season. He didn’t walk anybody and struck out 4. It was Porcello’s 3rd shutout of the season. Odorizzi (9-10) was charged with 3 runs over 6 and 2/3 innings to get the loss. Wil Myers made his return on Wednesday and went 0 for 3 for the Rays.
