Another sputtering performance doomed the Rays on Tuesday night as they lose to Jeff Locke and the Pirates 6-5 at Tropicana Field.  Pirates have now won 4 straight as they climb above .500 at 39-38.  The Rays (31-48) are now 4-5 on the 10 game homestand.  They have been outscored by the Pirates 14-6 in the series.

As they did in the series opener, the Pirates struck in the first inning.  Gregory Polanco lead off with a walk and stole second.  Jose Molina’s throw went into centerfield and that allowed Polanco to go to third.  He scored on a grounder by Andrew McCutchen to make it 1-0 Pittsburgh.

Pirates got to Archer for three more runs in the 3rd innings as they send 8 men to the plate.  Starling Marte’s RBI single made it 2-0.  McCutchen came through again, this time with an RBI single followed by a Neil Walker sac fly to make it 4-0 Pirates.

The Rays hit into two double-plays in each of the first two frames.  They got on the board in the 5th inning on an RBI double by Jose Molina.  Pirates RF Gregory Polanco misplayed a routine fly ball off the bat of Logan Forsythe to set it up.  Forsythe was credited with a triple and scored on the Molina double.  Russell Martin added a solo HR in the 8th off Brad Boxberger to make it 6-1.  Evan Longoria belted a 2-run HR off Locke in the 8th to make it 6-3 but they would not get closer.  Brandon Guyer singled home two runs to close it to 6-5 but Longoria flied to center to end it.

Archer went 7 innings on the night and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits while walking two and striking out 7.  He falls to 4-5 on the season.  Meanwhile, Locke (1-1) was in control for the most part.  He allowed three runs over 7 and 1/3 innings to get the win.  Mark Melancon held off a late Rays rally to pick up the save.
