TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - The FBI in Tampa has announced a new, national campaign to help prevent people from pointing lasers at aircraft.
There's new federal legislation that makes it a federal felony to do so, punishable by five years in prison.
The number of laser-related incidents has increased more than 1,000 % over the past few years.
Pilots say they're blinded by the pin-point light that expands and fills the cockpit hundreds of feet into the air. They say that is not only potential deadly for them an passengers, but those on the ground should an aircraft crash.
