Rays Get Another Mound Gem To Beat Royals

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays pitching staff extended their consecutive scoreless inning streak as a team to 23 innings, throwing their second consecutive shutout, holding the Kansas City Royals to just six hits in a 1-0 victory Monday at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay's only run came in the bottom of the second inning, as Ji-Man Choi gave Tampa Bay its first hit of the evening with a bunt single to third base away from the shift.  He was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Joey Wendle, but Kevin Kiermaier kept the inning alive with a base hit that moved Wendle to third and Willy Adames beat out the throw a ground ball to third baseman Rosell Herrera, though it took a challenge from Kevin Cash to overturn an out call, scoring Wendle for the only run of the game.

After getting the first five outs of the game, right-hander Hunter Wood gave way to lefty Ryan Yarbrough who allowed just two his and a walk in 5 1/3 innings to earn his 12th win over the year.  Ryne Stanek allowed a pair of hits in the eighth, but got Salvador Perez to hit a check swing bouncer right at Wendle to start an inning-ending 4-3 double play, and Jose Alvarado allowed a walk in the ninth, but struck out a pair in earning his fifth save.
