Rays Acquire Cap Space, Won't Rule Out More Deals

LAKE BUENA VISTA (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays made their third move in as many days Wednesday at baseball's Winter Meetings, sending pitcher Anthony Misiewicz to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for international signing bonus cap space.

The 23-year-old left-hander came to the Rays in August from Seattle in the deal that sent pitcher Ryan Garton and catcher Michael Marjama to the Mariners.  He went a combined 11-6 with a 4.51 earned run average between Seattle's affiliates in Modesto (high-A) and Arkansas (AA), and the Montgomery Biscuits, including a 3-1 record and a 3.49 ERA in Montgomery.

"The international market is a place where you can get some really good upside," senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom said Wednesday.  "And [there's] some high-end ability that is very far away but still has a chance to break through and really impact the club.  We're working on something that we think falls into that category."

Tampa Bay has been linked by Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com to 16-year-old infield prospect Jelfry Marte, who had his contract with a $3 million bonus voided by the Minnesota Twins due to vision problems.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported that Tampa Bay received $1 million of space from Seattle in the deal.

And despite being one of the most active teams during the meetings, Bloom did not rule out additional moves.

"There's nothing right at the finish line right now," Bloom said.  "I wouldn't rule it out, but there's nothing at the one-yard line right at this moment."

The St. Louis Cardinals, who pulled off a deal Wednesday for outfielder Marcell Ozuna from Miami, have been linked to reliever Alex Colome (including Colome liking and following a number of Cardinals fan Instagram pages), and other teams have reportedly reached out to the Rays about starters Jake Odorizzi and Chris Archer.
