MLB Teams Looking At Montoyo As Possible Manager

The Tampa Bay Rays may have a change in their coaching staff for the second consecutive season.

Jon Heyman of FanRagSports reports that the Rays have given teams permission to interview third base coach Charlie Montoyo for possible managerial posts.

Montoyo has been Kevin Cash's third base coach for his entire tenure as manager of the Rays.  Prior to making the big leagues as a coach, Montoto managed the Durham Bulls from 2007-2014, winning the Governor's Cup in 2009 and 2013.  Prior to taking over the Bulls, Montoyo was the skipper of the Montgomery Biscuits and Orlando Rays (AA) from 2003-2006, the Bakersfield Blaze (advanced-A) from 2001-2002, Charleston Riverdogs (A) from 1999-2000, the Hudson Valley Renegades (short-season A) in 1998 and Princeton Devil Rays in 1997.

Among the teams currently with managerial openings for 2018 are the Detroit Tigers, who announced Brad Ausmus would not return as skipper, and the Philadelphia Phillies, who said Pete Mackanin would be moving into a role as a special assistant to the general manager.  Other teams that could have openings at manager could include the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.
