Winter Haven Good Samaritan Killed in Crash

Osceola County, Fla. (970 WFLA) - A good Samaritan from Winter Haven died Saturday night after stopping to help a crash victim when another car came along and hit him, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Wilfredo Fontanez, 44, lost control of his car on the Florida Turnpike south of State Road 60 around 9:30 p.m., struck the guardrail and wound up stopped in the roadway, according to a news release from the FHP. Atricia Toribio, 27, of Winter Haven, saw the disabled car and parked her pickup truck in the center median. She and one of her passengers, Jose Zuenigia-Garcia, 30, got out of the truck to see if they could help.

State Troopers say that's when Gabrial Nieves, 22, came upon the accident scene, swerved to avoid Fontanez's car, ran off the road into the median, and struck Zuenigia-Garcia as well as two passengers who had gotten out of Fontanez's car. All three died.
