Getting the Lead Out in Polk County Schools

posted by Gordon Byrd -

BARTOW (970 WFLA) -- After a new round of testing, four out of five school buildings tested for lead in Polk County are in the clear.

The Polk School District Maintenance Director, Rory Luce, says a sample at Winston Academy in Lakeland turned out to be unacceptable. It showed 20 parts per billion, while the Polk County standard is 15 parts per billion. Both levels are acceptable under federal guidelines. Luce says it was tested right after a faucet had been left off. That fixture is getting a re-test and results should be available later this week.

Polk school officials also expect results from several other schools in areas including Bartow, Haines City and Frostproof over the next few days.
