Child Killed After TS Gordon Made Landfall

Miami,Fla. (970 WFLA)-Tropical storm Gordon is moving farther inland and weakening, but the threat of heavy rains and flooding continues.  

Gordon made landfall as a tropical storm last night on the northern Gulf coast just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border.  

The storm's powerful winds contributed to a death in Pensacola, where a child was killed when a tree limb was blown down onto a mobile home.

At 5:00 am EDT , the center of Tropical Storm Gordon was located near latitude 31.5 North, longitude 89.5 West, about 20 miles northwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. 

Gordon is moving toward the northwest near 14 mph.   A northwestward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected over the next couple of days.  

On the forecast track, the center of Gordon will move across the lower Mississippi Valley through Wednesday.  A turn toward the north-northwest and north is forecast to occur on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 40 mph with higher gusts in a few squalls near the center.   Gordon is likely to weaken to a tropical depression later this morning.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km)from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).
