Wake Up! Florida Troopers Target Drowsy Drivers

As we move into September, State troopers are launching a crackdown on drivers who didn't get enough sleep before driving.

FHP spokesman Sergeant Steve Gaskins in Tampa says drowsy driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving... and micro-sleeping or "nodding off" can be deadly. He recommends frequent breaks on long trips, or switching off drivers if you can.

If all else fails, caffeine can keep you going for a couple of hours.

Drowsy Driving Week in Florida, September 1-10, is dedicated to Ronshay Dugans, an eight year old girl killed in 2008 when a sleepy driver lost control and a cement truck plowed into her school bus in Tallahassee.
