Clearwater, Fla. (970 WFLA) Back-to-back crashes on the Courtney Campbell Causeway injured three Clearwater Police officers and collected a total of five cars, including three police cruisers, early Saturday, police said.
One officer tended to a disabled vehicle in the westbound lanes of the causeway shortly before 3:30 a.m. when a car rammed into the back of his cruiser. Soon two more officers arrived with their cruisers, all three had their emergency lights running, police said.
Another driver, who police say had fallen asleep at the wheel, slammed into one of the other cruisers, which ran into the third police car. All three officers suffered injuries from either the cars or debris in the crash, but their injuries were minor, police said.
The crash closed westbound lanes of the causeway for about three hours.
