Stand Your Ground Law Protects Clearwater Shooter

An argument at a Florida convenience store Thursday turned deadly when 47-year-old Michael Drejka pulled out a gun and shot 28-year-old father of three, Markeis McGlockton.

Today, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told reporters at a press conference that the shooting is “within the bookends of stand your ground and within the bookends of force being justified".

Markeis' girlfriend Britany Jacobs was parked in a handicapped spot in front of Circle A Food store on Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, without a permit. This led Drejka to approach the car and begin an argument, which prompted a passer-by to alert a store employee.

McGlockton exited the store and went to his girlfriend's aid, violently shoving Drejka to the ground. Store surveillance footage shows Drejka pull out a gun while still on the ground, and shoot McGlockton in the chest.

McGlockton stubbled back into the store, where he collapsed on the ground in front of his 5-year-old son. McGlockton's other two children, a 4-month-old and a 3-year-old, were both in the parked car.

Britany Jacobs told the Tampa Bay Times that she is in the process of hiring a lawyer.
