Hillsborough firefighters vote on new contract

Hillsborough County firefighters are voting on a new union contract, that would include random drug testing.

This vote comes just weeks after a Tampa Bay Times article reported that Hillsborough County fire rescue has more lenient drug testing policies than comparable fire departments in Florida.

The county wants to require random drug testing and explicitly ban use of illegal drugs on personal time. But union leadership says fire rescue management should be required to undergo drug testing as well.

The vote will take two days,  and fallout from the drug testing controversy could cause firefighters and paramedics to reject the contract. In that case, it's back to the bargaining table.
