Neglected Animals Removed from Brooksville Home

BROOKSVILLE (970 WFLA) -- Hernando sheriff's deputies have cleared some badly treated animals, wild and domestic, out of a Brooksville home.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis says they found seven horses, several dogs, cats and birds, and a couple of squirrels, at the home on 5253 Oney Drive Friday morning.

"All of them appear to be neglected and malnourished", Nienhuis says.

All the animals have been taken to the county animal shelter, where they'll be checked out by a veterinarian. Fish and wildlife agents have been called to take custody of the squirrels.

Charges or citations are possible against the animals' owner, identified by Neinhuis as Debora Meinhardt, 51.
