VENICE, FL (970 WFLA) -- If you live or work in Venice, keep your eyes open. You may find artwork hiding in plain sight.
More than four thousand people are following a Venice rock painting group on Facebook. Now the city is getting involved by inviting local artist Victoria Dietz to paint rocks with various city landmarks and iconic symbols.
"The cool thing about the project is you actually get involved by painting your own rocks and sharing them with... the community", Dietz says, "and it's really cool when people travel, because the rocks tend to spread."
Once you find one, you're encouraged to post it to a Facebook group, take a selfie at Venice City Hall, and then hide it again so someone else can discover it. Designs include the water tower, the jetties, a shark's tooth and the Centennial Park gazebo.
The painted rocks hobby started to grow last year in Washington state and spread quickly to some Florida communities. Lakeland was one of the first, quickly followed by groups in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas. A Facebook group, Venice Rocks, has more than four thousand members.
