Tail End of Winter Storm Brings Us Cooler Weather

TAMPA (970 WFLA) -- A cold front that's pushed a late winter snowstorm through the Northeast, is bringing unusually cold weather for March to the Tampa Bay Area.

But National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew McKaughan, based in Ruskin, says we probably won't set any records during this cold snap, expected to run through Thursday. Daytime highs will stay in the 60's, while overnight lows will reach the 40's, with upper 30's in some rural areas.

Thursday morning will be the coldest, says McKaughan, but the temperature probably won't reach the March 16th record of 37 degrees.

High winds and lower humidity could lead to increased fire danger Wednesday and Thursday. Florida's already seen an early start to wildfire season, with fires destroying homes and burning acreage in Polk and Collier counties.

When the front moved through overnight, forecasters spotted a tornado signature on radar in south Sarasota county. At about the same time, roof damage was reported to homes and an apartment building in Englewood. But McKaughan says it hasn't been confirmed whether a tornado or high winds caused that damage.
