Price & Longo Help Rays Down Boston 6-4

Posted July 25th, 2014 @ 10:13pm

Make it 8 straight wins for the Rays.  A big hit by Evan Longoria lifted the Rays to a 6-4 over the crumbling Red Sox at Tropicana Field on Friday night.  The Rays (50-53) are now 6-4 this season against the last place Red Sox (47-56).

Red Sox struck first against David Price and the Rays in the 2nd on a Shane Victorino solo HR to make it 1-0.  The Rays came back in the 5th inning.  James Loney led off the frame with a single to left.  With two out, Desmond Jennings smacked a 2-run blast off Jon Lester to give the Rays a 2-1 lead.

Red Sox were able to respond quickly in the 6th.  Dustin Pedroia led off the inning with a double.  Then, it was David Ortiz driving him home with an RBI single to make it a 2-2 game.  Then after Jonny Gomes blooped a single to right, Victorino came through with a big 2-out RBI single to give Boston a 3-2 lead.

The Rays came through against Boston’s vaunted bullpen in the 7th.  Zobrist tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single.  The big blow was a 3-run double by Longoria off Junichi Tazawa to give the Rays a 6-3 lead.

Price struggled at times but still put forth a solid outing— 8 innings pitched with 3 runs allowed and 10 strikeouts as he improves to 11-7 on the season.  More than a dozen scouts were on hand to see Price’s start.  Jake McGee closed out the 9th to pick up his 10th save.  Lester was done after 6 innings after allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits with 1 BB and 7 K’s.

On Saturday night, the Rays continue their series with the Red Sox at the Trop.  Jeremy Hellickson is back with the Rays and he will start against 11-6 John lackey.  Our coverage on 620am WDAE and 95.3FM begins at 6pm with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
