How Sweep It Is: Rays Win Fifth Straight

Posted July 2nd, 2014 @ 3:14pm by Steve Carney

Jake Odorizzi earned his fourth victory, and Sean Rodriguez homered and drove in three, as the Tampa Bay Rays capped a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 6-3 victory in the series finale Wednesday.

Brett Gardner led off the scoring with a solo home run off Odorizzi to start the bottom of the first inning.

Tampa Bay evened the contest in the third, as Ryan Hanigan started by drawing a walk off Vidal Nuno.  Kevin Kiermaier then grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Hanigan, and Desmond Jennings struck out for the second out of the inning.  Ben Zobrist doubled Kiermaier to third base, and a passed ball by Brian McCann allowed Kiermaier to tie the game.

McCann would make up for his mistake by again giving the Yankees the lead with a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the inning.

The Rays evened the game in the fourth with an RBI single by Sean Rodriguez in the top of the fifth.

Gardner once again broke the tie with an RBI single after Alfonso Soriano singled and Ichiro Suzuki drew a walk.

Tampa Bay again tied it up in the fifth as Jennings singled with one out, moving to third on a double by Zobrist, and scoring on a Brandon Guyer base hit, though Zobrist was thrown out at the plate trying to take the lead.

The Rays finally took the lead in the sixth, as Logan Forsythe doubled with one out and Rodriguez brought him home by blasting a two-run homer off reliever Shawn Kelley for a 5-3 advantage.

Tampa Bay got an insurance run in the ninth, loading the bases against David Huff and scoring on a groundout by James Loney.

Odorizzi (4-7) battled in to the sixth, and the Rays got a scoreless outings of relief from lefthander Cesdar Ramos, and righties Juan Carlos Oviedo, Joel Peralta and Brad Boxberger.

The victory is the Rays' fifth consecutive, a new season high.

The Rays travel to Detroit to open a four-game set with the Tigers starting Thursday.
