The Rays waited until late Sunday to make official what pretty much everyone watching the team recently already knew: Erik Bedard is out of the pitching rotation.

Rays manager Joe Maddon declared Jeremy Hellickson ready to go for the first time all season. The former Rookie of the Year, who had elbow surgery in January, will start Tuesday night's game against the Royals at Tropicana Field.

Bedard, the team announced, stays on the roster and will pitch out of the bullpen.

Sent back to Triple-A Durham were pitcher Jeff Beliveau and infielder Vince Belnome. The second move was made as lefty Cesar Ramos will return from paternity leave.

Hellickson underwent the full allotment, 30 days of rehab starts in the minors.

Tampa Bay goes up against former Ray James Shields Monday night. Coverage begins on WDAE with the Suncoast Hyundai Dealers Inside Pitch.
