Gomes heads back to minors

Posted May 20th, 2014 @ 8:38am

Needing to clear room for the return of Alex Cobb, the Rays sent reliever Brandon Gomes to the minors on Monday night.

The team will likely have Cesar Ramos available out of the bullpen, Ramos being the likely candidate to be bumped from the starting rotation.

No official announcement has been made along those lines yet but is likely Tuesday. But Gomes' demotion seems to indicate the Rays will give rookie outfielder Kevin Kiermaier an extended look. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times suggests the team may keep Kiermaier over Brandon Guyer, with Logan Forsythe another player who might get sent down.

As a guest with WDAE's Sports Page Tuesday, Topkin said the Rays also need to get something settled on catcher Ryan Hanigan, who has a hamstring injury and will come in early Tuesday afternoon for a Trop workout. If he requires a DL trip then the call-up will have to include a catcher.

Here is the full conversation with Topkin on the Sports Page:
