(via USF Communications) TAMPA, AUG. 5, 2014 – A home game against Seton Hall, road contests at NC State and Alabama and a neutral site game against Florida State highlight the USF men’s basketball non-conference schedule.
“This is a schedule that will challenge our guys before facing a competitive American Athletic Conference,” said first-year head coach Orlando Antigua. “It will be a great opportunity to get to play against major conference teams like Alabama, NC State, Seton Hall and a successful in-state program in Florida State.”
First-year head coach Orlando Antigua will coach on the Sun Dome court for the first time on Nov. 8 against IU-Pennsylvania in an exhibition contest. The Bulls open their regular season at home against Flagler College on Nov. 14 for the first regular season meeting between the two schools. Another first meeting will take place two days later as Jackson State comes to Tampa on Nov. 16.
USF will face UAB for the first time since Dec. 3, 2008. The game will take place on Nov. 20 in Birmingham, the Bulls’ first road game of the season. On Nov. 23, the Bulls will play at NC State, a team finished 22-14 and that made the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. It will be third all-time meeting in the series and USF’s first game in Raleigh, N.C. since 1972.
The Bulls host consecutive home games during the week of Thanksgiving. Hofstra will come to Tampa on Nov. 25, followed by Jacksonville on Nov. 29.
USF will play consecutive road games against teams that visited the Sun Dome last season beginning Dec. 2 at Alabama, a team the Bulls defeated 66-64 last December. It will be the first meeting in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1971. On Dec. 6, USF will play at Detroit to avenge last season’s 65-60 loss to the Titans.
The Bulls will play in the state of Florida for the remainder of December, beginning with a home game against Georgia Southern on Dec. 15.
Big East member Seton Hall visits the Sun Dome on Dec. 18, the first meeting since the 2013 Big East Championships. As announced in early April, USF will play Florida State for the first time since 2007 as part of the 21st annual MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic in Sunrise, Fla. The Seminoles finished 22-14 and made the semifinals of the NIT last season.
The Bulls wrap up their non-conference slate by hosting Southeastern Louisiana on Dec. 23 and Bowling Green on Dec. 28. It will be the third consecutive meeting between USF and Bowling Green with the Bulls winning all three times, including a 75-61 win in Ohio last season.
A total of 17 regular season home games will be played at the Sun Dome. In June, the American Athletic Conference announced home and away opponents for its conference schools. USF will play UCF, UConn, East Carolina, Houston, SMU, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa twice (home and away). The Bulls will play Cincinnati on the road and Memphis at home.
Game times and the complete conference schedule will be released at a later date.
