TSN Analyst Darren Pang joined WDAE's Ron and Ian Show Wednesday morning, ahead of Martin St. Louis being dealt to New York for forward Ryan Callahan and a conditional second-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and a first round selection in 2015.
Pang said that the most baffling part about the then-rumored trade was the reasoning behind the Lightning captain requesting it.
"I don't think this is the first time that Marty (St. Louis) has asked for a trade out of Tampa Bay," Pang said, "Which really surprises me, guys. You're sitting there with a terrific team, one of the really great coaches in the league - and I know it's early, but I really put Jon Cooper as one of the great coaches in the league already - and I think the Tampa Bay Lightning will compete for the Stanley Cup for many years to come.
"Why wouldn't Marty want to be a part of that? Just because he didn't make Team Canada? He didn't make Team Canada in 2010 and it's not a slight to him, it's a slight to how you build a team and it's a slight to what you have already. To be even considered at his age to be a top-14 forward in all of Canada? I think that's unbelievable.
"So I have a hard time believing a guy that has been around the league this long would want out of a situation based on a little adversity. Because the last time I looked, the Tampa Bay Lightning are in a pretty good spot and have a lot of great pieces along the way and he's the captain of the franchise."
St. Louis is on his way to New York and may dress for the Rangers tonight as they prepare to take on the Maple Leafs from Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, Steve Yzerman will address the media today at 4:30 pm from the Tampa Bay Times Forum, followed by an exclusive interview with Steve Duemig.
