Wilson's Wait Over: Catcher To Be Activated

ST. PETERSBURG (620 WDAE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have waited all season to see what Wilson Ramos would look like in their uniform.  They'll get their chance Saturday.

The team announced after Friday night's victory over the Baltimore Orioles that the catcher, signed as a free agent in the offseason after suffering a torn ACL at the end of last year, would be activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to Saturday's game.

Ramos had an All-Star season in 2016 for the Washington Nationals, hitting .307/.354/.496 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.  The injury likely cost him a king's ransom in free agency (he had turned down a three-year deal worth a reported $30 million from the Nats earlier in 2016, according to the Washington Post) and allowed the Rays to swoop in and sign him to a two-year contract worth $12.5 million.

Ramos started a rehab assignment June 5, playing five games with the single-A Charlotte Stone Crabs before ramping up his work with the Triple-A Durham Bulls.  In eight games with the Bulls he hit .250/.300/.536 with two doubles, two home runs and 5 RBI.

To make room on both the 40-man and the active roster for Ramos, the Rays have designated catcher Derek Norris for assignment.  Norris, signed by Tampa Bay during spring training, showed he still had power at the plate, with nine home runs and 24 RBI in 198 plate appearances, but hit .201/.258/.380 and struggled behind the plate, committing six errors and allowing six passed balls and 27 wild pitches.

The Rays now have ten days to trade Norris, place him on waivers, or release the six-year veteran.
