WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Police in Winter Haven say an armed burglary suspect is in critical condition from stab wounds after he broke into a home and attacked the residents.

Police say Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. of Janet Hunt was in her bedroom on her laptop when she turned to see a man, who police identified as Tobarus Anthony Johnson, standing in her room. Then, police say Johnson lunged at her, grabbed her purse and began hitting her when she yelled for help. The woman’s son David was in another bedroom, police say, and ran down to his mom and saw Johnson kicking and punching her.

Police say when David yelled at Johnson to stop and get out, Johnson came toward him and David armed himself with a kitchen knife to defend himself.

Police say David stabbed and slashed Johnson several times in what appears to be self defense. During the struggle, police say Johnson was able to take the knife from David and attempted to stab him, but missed.

Police say Johnson then broke a window in the kitchen and dove through it to get away. When David ran out of a bathroom window, police say he then asked neighbors for help who also chased Johnson three blocks before he collapsed. Police say the neighbors called for help and told authorities where Johnson was and he was identified by a Florida ID card and taken into custody.

Police say Johnson was taken to a hospital for treatment of multiple sharp force trauma injuries to his leg, torso and head and is in critical condition at this time.
