WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Winter Haven Police said a homeowner shot a suspected burglar after fearing for his and his family's safety.

Police said just before 7 a.m., two men and a woman inside a home on the 4200 block of Lake Marianna Dr. heard what sounded like someone entering the back of the house.

One of the men told police he went to investigate and found a man rattling the French doors leading off a back porch, got a firearm and fired a shot in an attempt to scare the reported intruder off, police said.

Police said the intruder, identified as 40-year-old Mitchell Large of Winter Haven, continued inside the home. Undeterred by the shot at this point, police said all three residents had armed themselves and were in the kitchen.

Police said after the initial shot, Large continued to charge at the homeowner, who feared for his life and the safety of his family. Then, police said the homeowner fired at Large striking him in the torso at least one time.

The total number of shots fired has not been confirmed at this time, police said.
