LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. (PASCO COUNTY NEWS RELEASE) – Pasco County Animal Services is bursting at the seams with adoptable dogs. The shelter is in need of caring individuals and families to take these wonderful pets home.
Citizens can help the shelter by becoming adoptive families, joining rescue groups, and fostering animals to help ease overcrowding. If you cannot adopt, then try fostering, which helps the dog in several ways. First, it gets them out of the shelter into a home environment for a while. And second, the foster family can provide great information on the dog’s behavior outside the shelter for future adopters. Remember, fostering can save two lives – the animal that is fostered and the individual that opens the cage.
“The shelter is currently over capacity for dogs and we need help now,” said Animal Services Manager Mike Shumate. “We need individuals and families in our community to come out and provide good homes for these dogs. These dogs have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and have all their vaccinations. They are just waiting for a good home.”
In an effort to save more animals and give shelter pets a second chance to find forever homes, the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners adopted the SAVE 90% Program on November 12, 2012. Currently, the live animal release rate is 89% as compared to 54% in 2012. Since the SAVE 90% Program was implemented 2,347 fewer animals have been euthanized.
Also contributing to the success of the SAVE 90% Program has been increased marketing and outreach efforts, Spay Pasco, a low-cost spay and neuter program for low-income residents, a Trap Neuter Return Program, an increase in pets being returned to their owners, an Animal Foster Program, increased partnerships with rescue groups and volunteers, and staff training and development.
The Pasco County Animal Services Adoption Center is located at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The Adoption Center is open from 12:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Please come by and save a life.
