CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA.com) - Hundreds are remembering a Clearwater man who spent most of his life protecting others.

Whether as a cop, a security guard or a seasoned detective, Doug Carey dedicated himself to safety.

He died on Tuesday when a speeding driver ran a red light.

Inside the Grace Lutheran Church in Clearwater, about 350 people came to honor Carey.

The retired Police Department Detective turned school crossing guard is remembered as one of the good guys.

“He had his act together like a lot of officers never get there, and he taught me a lot about police work” said Former Deputy Police Chief, Dewey Williams.
