BRANDON, Fla. (970 WFLA) - According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to 3117 Bloomingdale Villas Court just after 5:30 Tuesday morning in reference to a man attempting to break into an apartment.
Deputies said they received information that a man, who lives in the area, was walking around the neighborhood carrying a 20-lb barbell weight and a large butcher knife and that the subject had stabbed a cat and was attempting to break a window to gain entry to an occupied apartment.
When deputies arrived, HCSO said they found 41-year-old Lew G. Tyree II matching the description and attempted to gain control of him to calm him down. One deputy deployed his taser, HCSO said, but was unsuccessful.
Authorities said sheriff’s office deputies made numerous commands for Tyree to drop the weapon, but he would not comply and then they said Tyree turned towards deputies and made threatening comments from about five feet away.
In fear for their lives, HCSO said all three deputies fired at the subject.
Officials said Tyree was taken to BrandonRegionalHospital where he was pronounced deceased.
All three deputies were placed on administrative leave, as part of standard procedure, according to HCSO.
