Deputies issue scam alert for Hernando County

Posted June 1st, 2014 @ 8:47am

HERNANDO (970 WFLA) - Hernando County deputies are warning citizens of a SCAM ALERT involving Jury Summons and/or Arrest Warrants.

Deputies say they received complaints Saturday about a man calling various citizens in the county in an attempt to scam money from them.

Deputies say the caller identified himself as Lieutenant John Martin from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and told the citizen/victim that someone in the household was going to be held in contempt of court for not complying with a grand jury summons and that a bench warrant would be issued.

Then, the man told the citizen that in order to get this "all cleared up," they would have to pay him immediately, deputies say, and the fees were in excess of $1,300. If the citizen did not pay immediately a warrant would be issued, according to deputies.

HCSO says the suspect asked for both cash and a Green Dot (pre-load) debit card.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office wants citizens to know that this is a SCAM.  If you receive a call from this individual or of this nature, deputies say please call the Hernando County Sheriff's Office immediately.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says it does not employ an individual by the name of Lieutenant John Martin.

If you have information on this case or if you have been the victim of this scam, please call the Hernando County Sheriff's Office at 352-754-6830.
