TAMPA, Fla. (TBO.com) - A week after authorities said Darrin Campbell shot his wife and two children, burned down his rented Avila home and turned the gun on himself, investigators still don’t know why he did it.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies ruled the case a murder-suicide Friday. Investigators said a gun registered to Campbell was used to shoot all four people in the home and that he had bought several gas cans and fireworks worth more than $600 in the days leading up to the blaze.

Darrin Campbell was an executive whose career featured stints at high-profile companies such as PODS and Anchor Glass Containers. He has no criminal record and no apparent history of mental health issues, authorities said.

Erma Ruffkess, communications director at CarrollwoodDay School, where Darrin Campbell volunteered as treasurer and where his children were students, said Wednesday that the school has no reason to believe he was misusing its funds.

“As speculation naturally occurs, we have no indication there has been any financial impropriety as it relates to our school,” Ruffkess said in a statement. “There are extensive checks and balances and protocols in place to ensure the security of all school bank accounts and accounting/financial records. A complete financial audit of the school is conducted by a professional accounting firm on an annual basis.”

Harry Costello, a lawyer representing Darrin Campbell’s last employer, a Channelside-based digital services provider called Vastec, said the company is not auditing his work as chief operating officer and has no plans to do so.
