THONOTOSASSA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Hillsborough County officials say an alligator attacked a woman canoeing on the Hillsborough River Thursday afternoon.

It happened around 1:45 p.m near John B. Sargeant Park on the 12700 block of Hwy 301.

The sheriff's aviation unit used aerial search crews to spot the victim. She and another woman in a canoe were found not far from the park's boat ramp.

County firefighters launched a motorized, zodiac style boat to transport the victim back to the park where she was then taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

It's not clear how she was bitten. FWC is handling the remainder of the investigation.
