TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Nearly two million Floridians will be hitting the road this holiday weekend on vacation, the largest travel volume since the recession. And they’ll be traveling more than 50 miles.

Mark Jenkins with AAA says surveys show Americans are spending more money this year travelling than they did a year ago.

“On top of that there was a long and unusually harsh winter and that prevented a lot of people from getting out and traveling so for many Americans this is their first opportunity to take a trip this year,” Jenkins said.

88 percent of Americans will be driving to their vacation destination, according to AAA.
