(Punta Gorda, FL)  --  A Punta Gorda policeman and his boss are facing criminal charges in the summertime shooting death of Mary Knowlton.  Charlotte County's state attorney Stephen Russell yesterday filed a manslaughter charge against Officer Lee Coel in the August killing of the 73-year-old woman.

At the time, Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis admitted Coel shot and killed Knowlton during a citizen's police demonstration and affirmed the killing was an accident.  The state attorney is also charging the police chief for culpability in the woman's death.  In November, the city of Punta Gorda awarded the woman's survivors a two-million-dollar settlement.
